Cool Photos

Did you see that razor blade? I didn’t first time round! This is a photo by the Spanish photgrapher Chema Madoz, who has a curious way with the lens. A multifaceted artist, he combines photography with sculpture, drawing and downright idiosyncrasy to come up with shots that make you look twice. I’ve just been introduced to his work by Quique during an extremely pleasant and leisurely lunch down at Noveccento. I’m going to link to his site rather than post loads of his stuff here, ’cause there’s so much good stuff that I think it’s just better that anyone who’s interested has a good browse there. Oops, no!! – can’t resist putting this one in… look how the knot in the wood imitates the flame! There’s an arch made of books, which would be the keystone for you? A book giving birth to a novella. Take a look, please, this guy’s imagination knows no bounds!

Anyway, here’s his site.

We had a lot of fun in Noveccento this lunchtime, listening to festive ‘spill picks: Some Misunderstanding, No Cigarettes, Sleepless and of course the list you all so kindly put together for Quique whilst he was recovering from his operation (Debbym, Brassbanda are firm favourites here in Aluche, btw). He surprised me with this. Who’s singing? I’d never have guessed! This is a sampler but the album sounds like it may have a bit to offer! (Credit to Tincanman who got the artist right almost immediately – it’s Cyndi Lauper)

  1. Maki, I have absolutely no idea who’s singing – is it Sue Lawley doing an impersonation of the young Amy Winehouse?
But on the LaBrassbanda front – just in case you own one of those satellite dish things that can get you telly from anywhere in Europe: Bayern 3 has got a programme on about them TONIGHT at 23.35!
Actually, I was playing their CD at work last week (I work in a CD shop in Hamburg) when a fresh-faced young blond Frollein got very excited – turns out she’s from Bavaria and actually knows the lads (they played at her brother-in-law’s cousin’s goddaughter’s wedding) and couldn’t believe we’d even heard of them up here. Let alone in Espana (sorry, don’t know where there#s a twiddle for the n on this keyboard)!

  2. No satellite thingy, more’s the pity. Love the story though. Music does that, doesn’t it?

I’ll spill the beans regarding the singer on Monday if no-one’s got it by then…

  3. Surprised because it doesn’t really sound like her voice, seems to have lost some power. I listened to it a few times even keeping Tin’s guess in mind, and it still didn’t sound like her. But good on her though, she always had a great voice, and can definitely sing the blues.

  4. I’ve seen that matchstick pic somewhere else recently, possibly in the G. Not my taste in photos, they remind me of visual Mozart string quartets and I’m much more into the looseness of a big band or a reggae group. For that sort of precision I like Ansel Adams California landscapes.
