Oh, Sweet Pea….

“All these… weirdos, and me… getting a little better every day right in the middle of ‘em. I had never known… I had never even imagined for a heartbeat that… there might be a place in the world for people like us.”

Sometimes you watch a film and a song really stands out, and then you have to wait until the end credits to try and work out who it is, and sometimes the writing’s too small or it flashes by too quickly or you cant work out just from the song titles which one it is. But then you do find out who it is, these days with the internet, it’s all lot easier, and then you do a bit of research and find that jasonaparkes has already bigged up the exact song in an Amazon review and made mention of the exact sequence of the film that it’s from (saying that it’s the best dancing onscreen since Band A Parte, no less).

And then you realise that if you post the song on The ‘Spill, the chances are that you’ll find out a lot more about the song and the singer, and probably which exact hip-hop artists used the suspiciously sample-able drum break in the tune, and possibly more.

Am I wrong?

  1. Oh, ‘Spill points are on offer if you can name the film, and which song, & who sang it, that the film is named after.

  2. Big Audio Dynamites ‘Rush’ sampled it.. if that helps!

I have to whisper this.. steen knows:
I don’t really get The Clash (not that I dislike them – just never really had time to listen) but I’m a huge B.A.D fan.. I should make up for this… but you know, there’s new stuff about (or a legacy edition of This Is Big Audio Dynamite) to play!!!

    • I think I’ve heard the drum loop a million times, ever since I had ears – mebbe that’s why the song stuck out, but then I first watched the film about ten years ago and it never registered.

‘Spill point to Maki there, by the way.

      • Here I am! Thanks for noticing I wasn’t around. I’m more touched than is reasonable.

I was at the shore for a few days. Just two nights away, but I feel all discombobulated.

And I was going to do an album of the week, but I tripped myself up by doubts as to it’s suitability as an AOTW.

But, what the heck, I’ll do it anyway!!

  3. In a month (Aug. 66) that featured Summer In the City, Mother’s Little Helper, Over Under Sideways Down , Sunshine Superman & Wild Thing all in the top 10 at the same time Sweet Pea peaked at #8. It was pure confection & should have probably reached #1 based on airplay. You literally couldn’t get away from it. Only having loved Sheila & Everybody, a couple of hits from Tommy earlier in the 60s saved me from truly hating this. It’s just too damn catchy I tell ya. Oh & Revolver was released I think the same week this peaked or close to it.
