Booka Shade- just sounds like yello – so is ace
Cocorosie – not annoying coco – love em
Sage Francis- questions have been asked about the album, will listen if I ever get any cash.
Nas & Damian Marley – loved jamrock, so will be interesting.
Janelle Monáe – oohh saul williams yeah!
and Black Keys, Holy Fuck Batman!, CC drops goes straight to my old man….
see I’d forgotten it was the end of May (except for the counting down of days with tears in my eyes like) but have been avoiding looking at records.. i’ve hit my spending limit early… then you go and temptingly put this lot, like a dangly carrot to a donkey in front of my nose… I absolutely congratulate you on a fabulous list again.. but grrr in your general direction for the temptation.
I’ve been listening to 4 of these:
The Band of Horses is taking a kicking from indie snobs who worry the band might get popular, but it’s a good un. You can’t stay 20 forever.
Like the Black Keys very much. Had Next Girl
set aside for an earworm. (Haven’t beenable to listen to the playlists yet, so sorry Shoey if this is a dupe).
I’ve had the Carolina Chocolate Drops on iPod for months now (did it come out earlier in Canada or UK or something?) and keep going back to it every couple of weeks because I think i should really like it. But it never clicked. Would love to get the songbook though!
Had my first listen of Sleigh Bells start to finish just this week after hearing much heralded bits and pieces over the spring, and it’s just not my thing I guess.
Don’t know the others so will vote for Band of Horses and Black Keys – both keeper albums for me – and save my last for something on the playlist if I can get a moment’s peace to listen sometime before the month runs out.
That first, lonely black keys vote was mine. I was going to comment, but work just got in the way *glares*…
+1s to Mnemonic’s request for Phosphorescent to be added. I haven’t been able to listen to it yet (other than “It’s Hard to be humble…”, but I’m really anticipating it.
Having said that, many interesting ones in that list, I just need time to listen and figure it all out. I must have put my 36-hour days in my other jacket!
I’ve really been enjoying all of these. Actually surprising myself by my own reactions to some. I have a few more to listen to. This is a tough vote – even with 3 chances.
They are going to have to form a coalition with As I Lay Dying to take the reigns of power away from Band Of Horses who have disappointed the electorate. Analogies – don’t you just love em.
Analogies – no don’t love em, they give me a rash.
(or was that Al Lergies? ……)
Shane, That is Yello with Booka, but the Yelloless Booka is fine too. The Janelle Monae is all over the place & is a continuation of some weird concept from last year’s mini album. Really shouldn’t work but it’s great. E-mail me your birthday wish-list & will see what I can do.
the grey is rapidly taking over my hair – don’t know if that is age or the impending baby – or my inbuilt natural ability to stress!
.. but mark e didn’t really look smooth and spritely – when young tho did he? where as I was Handsome as fuck in my youthful (doctored photographs)
cheers for the pressies…
Should Saul Williams be on the votable list as well, or am I crazy?
Shane – as a seasoned 40 year old. The week before fucking sucks – really fucking sucks. But it’s the hardest time. Hopefully your birthday itself will be fun, and after that you’ll really stop thinking about it until you’re nearly 41, when gloom will set in again. Unless, of course, you HAVE A NEARLY BRAND NEW BABY TO DISTRACT YOU!! Well-played, my friend.
Not sure about a voting system that gives our three votes equal weighting. Would suggest an alternative vote or single transferable vote might more accurately reflect the views of the electorate. I voted for change with Janelle Monae, but also gave my backing to an Americana coalition with Band of Horses and Phosphorescent.
I love this feature, but there is something essentially flawed about voting for an Album of the Month on the basis of one track. But I will try to listen to some of these in full.
Said before that I miss the old Album Of The Week. We would take turns to drop an entire overlooked album & talk about it on the ‘Spill. Be great if someone got the ball rolling to revive it.
Soz! I was away in the Highlands, filming! They don’t have internet up there y’know!
I’ve been experimenting with antenna on the Highland cattle horns (there’s a field of them up the road) once I’ve removed the bugs – like them getting up and moving around – we shall sort that coverage problem out….at this point in time they have to lay down on a huge hill/mountain… so Norfolk isn’t the best for my tests.
glad you are okay – hope you enjoyed the filming.
Black Keys almost got my vote and I liked Sleigh Bells but Carolina Chocolate Drops remind me too much of Hayseed Dixie; one of those bands that are probably fun live but I wouldn’t want to listen to them more than once.
Mnemonic, I saw Hayseed Dixie a couple of years ago and thought they were bloody awful. The sound was so distorted, I couldn’t even tell whether there was anyone singing, it was just noise (and I’m not one for just noise). There was a small group standing near me, all even older than I am, who were obviously expecting to experience some real live blue grass, and we all left early (I recall that I was particularly pissed off by a Beautiful Young Thing who thought every last square inch of the venue was her own personal moshpit, regardless of how far into a corner the beer she was sloshing had backed).
My vote has allegedly been counting, but it wasn’t showing yesterday – have 2 of you voted for Claudia Quintet? Yes? Then we’re quits
Tried to put my third vote on Phospheresence, but it says my vote has already been counted. So i am guessing you have to use all 3 at the same time.
Imitates life I suppose – you don’t vote for your MP and a councillor and then come back a couple days later and choose a Pope. We could have mid-term/month elections though. Or a byelection if one of the chosen artists dies, or at least suffers a large dip in sales momentum.
Will try to listen this evening and vote, if my eyes stay open long enough. (long day, not the music’s fault).
Meanwhile and apropos of the recent Swedish music post, I thought I’d mention- particularly for Mnemonic, in case you don’t know it- Jan Johansson’s sixties recording Jazz på Svenska, which I just discovered by chance- lovely recordings of swedish folk themes by Johansson’s piano trio. It’s on Spotify.
Coincidentally there’s a Janelle Monae thread on GU, and listening to Many Moons it occurs to me- and I’m apparently not the only one, according to a quick google- that the doo-doo-doo riff is probably lifted from the Pointer Sisters Sesame Street Pinball Number Count.
Respect.
do you have the ‘DJ Food Re-edit – Special extension by Strictly Kev’ (I had to look that up) from ‘c is for cookie’
we had the record kicking about – but someone got their dirty paws on it.
No, but I do watch the video mashup on Youtube from time to time. We forty-somethings have this overwhelming need to satisfy feelings of nostalgia sometimes.
You’ll see…
can I use phrases like
‘nostalgia not what it used to be’
and ‘ ‘when I was your age…we had solid records made from the remains of dinosaurs’ and such like..
it was DJ Food making me think about being 40 since his May 5th post anyway:
What a marvellous feature shoegazer. My humble thanks to thee. I’m rather hoping you’re a music journo, I’d hate to think you actually bought all those CDs. But then, he mused, if you were a mj, you’d have included Jonsi last month huh ?
So kudos to thee.
I loved Janelle Monae and have just spent half an hour watching the youtube stuff. Astoundingly good. Jackson meets Gaga with Outkast and Funkadelic not to mention Alesha Dixon (high praise from me believe). I then went straight to a certain website and ordered the CDs.
Holy Fuck is brilliant but by the time I heard it I’d already voted for Phosphorescent and Sage Francis. Loved that deep hiphop weirdshit, don’t know who they are or anything but clearly great they are.
Holy Fuck gets better as it goes on. Who are they anyway ?
Wasn’t keen on the Horses. Chocolate Drops are great, but didn’t get my vote. Sleighbells had a vibe but er no I’m not on those drugs. As I Lay Dying I’m afraid I put him out of his misery and broke his neck. Seemed humane at the time. Has to change the band name now.
Claudia are you a quartet or a quintet ? Not that I care that much – your track is insubstantial.
Nas and Damian Marley is a great team in theory but I’d expect more than that, any other month woulda been top choice ??
Harvey Milk = no.
Booka Shades I couldn’t get on with at all I’m afraid. Mind you I’m not stoned. Hang on.
Ah. Now. Look. Yes. Exactly.
They’re all spiffingly fabulous I reckon !
Coco Rosie – I bet they’re great live, but on first listen there’s a tweedledee about it that grates my carrot.
Black Keys – yes, this is good music, in my arrogant opinion (imao)
Sorry about that it’s a computer command clearly – two arrows like this : < around a phrase or word will cause it to disappear from your post. The other way round (see above if you can be arsed frankly) is fine.
Flippin 'eck.
Laters.
Hit the post button under RSS in the top right. Only works for the most recent 10 Spill posts & different browsers work differently. Works fine with Safari, possibly with Firefox & don’t know about IE.
It’s not working with Firefox. I haven’t been able to download since tyhe first post on the new blog. I might get one track but never more than that. This one isn’t working at all.
if you can’t download from your browser – you can use google reader – the post will appear with a player – for each song that says ‘original audio source (track name)’
right click on the song you like: and download as…
once again this is in safari (but on a PC) – so might work in others.
Total genius, Shane, thank you. I’d never heard of Gogle Reader before.
and that should be Google. By the way, I’m using Forefox on a PC, if anyone else has that combination.
and that should be Google. By the way, I’m using Firefox on a PC, if anyone else has that combination.
hope it stays working for you – tinny mentioned it for keeping tabs on the post you haven’t read – so I’ve been trying it as I’ve been busy for the weekend… seems good for keeping an eye on stuff.
Small voice – my real album of the month wasn’t in the list. John Grant -Queen of Denmark. I’ll have to make a track an earworm, I think.
Hey, where’s Phosphorescent in the list? I want to vote for him.
And I didn’t think I’d voted for Black Keys. Was that someone else who only voted for one band?
Booka Shade- just sounds like yello – so is ace
Cocorosie – not annoying coco – love em
Sage Francis- questions have been asked about the album, will listen if I ever get any cash.
Nas & Damian Marley – loved jamrock, so will be interesting.

I want more votes!
Have Cocorosie found the off switch on their anoyingness? I like them much better that way.
oh Janelle Monáe is rising to the top… is the rest of the album modern R+B stylee? don’t know her at all.
(….oh the track with Big Boi has a funky arsed back beat – and nice scratching…. confused now!)
The Janelle Monae album is great. It has a bit of everything – Andre 3000 funk, Of Montreal, pastoral folk…
certainly sounds interesting..
I’ve been listening to 4 of these:

Took me a minute to figure out my relationship to AOTM but the penny finally dropped; I’ll have a listen and vote 3 times in a bit.
That first, lonely black keys vote was mine. I was going to comment, but work just got in the way *glares*…

Great set. I woulda voted for Phosphorescent too, if it had appeared in the list!
Will fix the poll so that it’s less rigged than most elections.
if a few thousand can’t vote for the uk government – why should they get a Phosphorescent vote.. eh eh.
They are going to have to form a coalition with As I Lay Dying to take the reigns of power away from Band Of Horses who have disappointed the electorate. Analogies – don’t you just love em.

you are a star.
have you seen the new Fall vid:
http://www.dominorecordco.com/uk/news/06-05-10/the-fall-premiere-new-bury-video/
They really missed a trick not casting Mark E as the new Freddy Krueger. Sometimes old age really kicks you in the ass….
(Oopsy, shouldn’t go there, should I?)
the grey is rapidly taking over my hair – don’t know if that is age or the impending baby – or my inbuilt natural ability to stress!

Saul votes go to Janelle, cause it’s her record.
But it’s a separate track, right? (I just want to know I’m not crazy)
I think I knew the Black Keys from the Black Roc project, but I’d never heard their own stuff. Like this one.
You sure can pick ‘em, Shoey.
Nope, you’re crazy.
(or mixing your Sauls & Sages – could happen to anyone)
Look at the label on track 3, second half…
CRAZY!!! THAT’S RIGHT, I’M CRAZY!!!!
Told you it could happen to anyone!
Ok – fixed. Can I get back to the basketball now?
hey steen you try and reassure me by gibbering like a nut nut – cheers, much to look forward to then!!!!!!!
my best friend turns up tomorrow, bringing her four kids and long suffering husband, so I should have my mind taken off it for a couple of days…..

I listened to the Sleigh Bells four times in a row. Does this mean child trust funds are goin to be brought back?
WHAT TIME DO YOU CALL THIS LAD _ I’VE BEEN WORRIED SICK!
Soz! I was away in the Highlands, filming! They don’t have internet up there y’know!

OK.. easy enough.. Holy Fuck for president, Janelle secretary of state. Booka gets the treasury. Love the “horns” in the Janelle playout.

that’s cocorosie not being grating!
I got plenty that’d send a sane man screaming – and I’m a fan.
(coincidently I’ve just got to the Of Montreal in the Janelle Monáe album (he can certainly test your patients too))
Ok I put two comments inside these things > and they disappeared ! you know those arrows
A strong selection this month, I definitely need 3, (or 4) votes…
ejd – have you just made a comment disappear?
or is this turning forty brain freeze happening 5 days early!
Not me guv!
no – it wasn’t you.
it’s just this reply thing – I just lost your comment
(it’s all the way up top – few.. 4 more days ’til crazy kicks in then!)

I just tried it – why would you type something to make it then disappear? what use could that be?
hey don’t knock the editors. they love to make stuff disappear, especially after they’ve (or someone else usually) has typed it.
Eh steen ?
Shane has kindly voluneered to curate this beast next month. Thanks all for listening.
yep – I’m the sucker.
hope it’s a good month.
(good collection this time out – let’s see what June kicks up)
Any chance of dropping in a box near you ?

Good idea mnemonic. I’ve been enjoying that one too
hang on, I got it mixed up. I did give it a couple listens but didn’t really like it much.
