Kinkaid – Parachute
I got the Super Hawaii album on a whim while CD shopping in Portland with my daughter 10 years ago. The shop was playing it & upon my inquiry the shop girl informed me it was the only copy they had & she was wanting it. A conversation followed involving Kinkaid’s influences, people she & my daughter both knew & the Kinks as I recall. The girl decide to sell it to me if we could let her listen to the rest. A quite delightful 1/2 hour was had. Have no idea still what Parachute is about but it still gets an automatic repeat when it pops up on the multiple playlists I have it on. - Fintan
Future Islands – Tin Man
Something about this track caught my eye. Actually, it is chosen to mark the 30th anniversary of Ian Curtis’ death. This newish North Carolina (a hotbed of late) band draws approving comparisons with New Order and Peter Hook. - tin
PJ Harvey & John Parish – Black Hearted Love
Probably already familiar to many, this is classic Polly. A brilliant riff, off-kilter rhythm, travelling from almost-sweet to almost-harsh with a joyful spring in its step. Simply brill! - Chris7572
High Llamas – Checking In, Checking Out
Some of you will know this early 90s item; but it always arouses interest amongst those who don’t… it came up on my shuffle the other day, and it sounded like a perfect harbinger for summer. I strongly suspect this is a deliberate pastiche of a well-known 70s LA duo, but that might just be my over-exposed ears playing tricks. - Shiv
Lo Jo – Dobosz
A French group from Angers who play north and west African influenced music. The two female singers – Yamina Nid el Mourid and Nadia Nid el Mourid – are Berbers from Mali. The group was active in Festival du Desert, which brought Tinariwen to western audiences. - goneforeign
Freddie Robinson – Wonder What It Is
It’s the harmonising on the chorus that counts as a 12-bar blues-earworm for me; throw in some great lyrics, an Otis-Carla type relationship, Freddie’s guitar playing and excellent piano support and there you go. If RR does duets, or songs about wondering, then it might stand a chance. - DaddyPig
Anouar Brahem – Dance With Waves
From The Astounding Eyes of Rita, this tune conjurs lovely images and I can’t get the main riff on bass clarinet out of my head! - GlassHalfEmpty

Why does Tatanka have one hand bigger than the other?

Just an incompetent cameraman!
er, I mean an incompetent cameraman bumped me as I was taking the shot. Yeah, thats it! Nothing wrong with my framing.
Well, nothing that a good course or two couldn’t solve.
That might be perspective, sowc – I’d be more concerned that his right arm seems to be on the wrong way around.
Starting my day with these. High Llamas & Anouar Brahem are sounding real good. I’ll be coming back this evening after a pint for another round with Freddie Robinson tho’. DP- any idea who the female singer is?
Fintan, after a little ferreting around, I found the line-up for the album it’s from (“At The Drive In”):
Freddy Robinson – vocal, guitar & harmonica
Al Vescovo – guitar
Harold Mason – drums
Paul Humphrey – drums & percussion
Joe Sample – piano & organ
Wilton Felder – bass
Monk Higgins – organ
Bobbie Hall – conga & percussion
Alex Brown & Clydie King & Vanetta Fields – vocals
So, it’s one of those singers… And it looks like keyboards and bass were future Crusaders ! I’ll try and find out more later, but my back’s a bit painful at the moment and prolonged computering isn’t good.
Freddy converted to Islam and changed his name to Abu Talib; he died in October last year. http://www.bluesandjazzsounds.com/reviews/freddyrobinsonobit.html for lots more info. He played on a great many records by many famous blues people !
I sympathize DaddyPig ’cause my back is a bit put out at the moment.
Seems yesterday my front got to go out before it did and it’s been put out ever since.
Thanks tin, I’ll try walking through doorways backwards and hope I don’t put my front out…
More e-ferreting on those three female singers reveals time spent in the Raelettes, Ikettes, huge amounts of work with loads of famous people, some work in their own right that looks well worth exploring one day… but I’ve not found anything to say who sings on the particular song.
DP thanks for the info. Just having another listen & it’s still all good. Great article BTW.
Great stuff etc etc.
Loved Kinkaid – hope the girl in the record shop got her own copy. The High Llamas I remember reading about back in the day, but never actually hearing. They sound just like I hoped they would – must listen more. And I want to play the violin like on that LoJo track.
Just had a very quick cursory listen in snatches – sounds like a really lovely collection this week. The Lo Jo gave me a bit of a start at first because i misread it as J Lo.
Nice things but I loved the last three, Lo Jo, Freddie Robinson and Anouar Brahem best.
Enjoyed all of this week’s earworms, particularly Goneforeign’s, though they were all great. Thanks to all for posting them. Tatanka’s hands don’t look exactly right because the arm with the wristwatch is . . .
…not his?
Will make time to listen. Thanks, Tin, as always for this feature.
MAKI – It’s my left ‘un. I reckon Tinny cropped it for fun.
Thought as much, WEBCORE. Looks like you guys had a great day out! Time for the Maki family to get back over to the UK.
MAKI – it was great. That shot was taken on the cliffs at Thurstaston. That’s the Dee estuary as the tide is starting to come in. North Wales is usually crystal clear in the distance, but it was exceptionally hot and hazy. Tatanka spotted a stationary seal in the creek, probably taking fish as the tide brought them in. Then Tinny spotted its mate. I was like, What where? Oh yeah, I see ‘em now.
WEBCORE – that’s what I love about the UK – you really don’t have to go far to see things that can take your breath away. I grew up near Middlesbrough – an industrial hell-hole if ever there was one and yet the Tees Estuary (Seal Sands) was capable of throwing up this kind of surprise on a regular basis.
Sorry, tin for the off post ramblings but you posted the photo!
not really getting the comparisons in tin man (the track) but after washing over me first listen this morning it’s creeping up on me now.
Loved Lo’Jo – Dobosz… been listening to a lot of Goran Bregović this week and their seems to be a Gypsy music style cross over from country to continents and back again.. feels good.
(I have 7 tracks on dvd of Tinariwen & Tunng live – how do I rip those into my itunes clever tech people out there????)
I will have to search out my PJ and Parish albums too..
again all great tunes people… nice work.
as for the photo – laughed my head off.
(luckily I’m competent enough to photoshop it back on my elbow)
Just had one scroll through all the tunes, the top of the pops for right now is Anouar Brahem – Dance With Waves, I’ve liked this album since it’s release but isolating that cut here and drawing attention to the bass clarinet makes it special. It’s not just the clarinet though, it’s also the way it blends with that wonderful percussion that seems to be in the same key. Been a bit busy but I’ll have another go tomorrow.
I’ve had a most enjoyable listen through this, even the songs that aren’t usually my cup of tea. The Anouar Brahem is lovely and as you say GHE, conjures up thoughts and pictures.
I’ve been to Thurstaston many years ago, and spent a happy sunny afternoon with the sandstone and estuary. Was TY saluting the seal ?
Nice selection bo selector. Tin Man sounds like Tom Waits younger brother in an 80s trib band.
I’ve never liked PJ Harvey but that song is a cracker.
I love the High Llamas – in the musical family tree they’d be connected to Brian Wilson – one of the few bands to use the banjo in a pop context. Although this song seems descended from CSNY. Not a million miles away…
Lo Jo I’d never heard of – although I’ve travelled in the Atlas and met many Berbers, and I thought this was the standout track this week. Truly uplifting, exciting and melodic.
Freddie Robinson was lovely – great harmony chorus.
Anouar Brahem is right on the money and has a lovely contemporary flavour for such traditional-sounding music.
Many thanks to all contributors !
Shane: Check this re. importing dvd audio into iTunes.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=importing+audio+from+dvd%27s%3F&btnG=Google+Search
I did a search GF
then my mind went boggle!
I had a free download of one but it didn’t work – or I didn’t.
I was hoping there was something easy – tried and trusted.
pc not mac.
Shane if you can rip the dvd and put the songs you want to convert in the box I’ll convert them to mp3 (Maki jr acquired a program called Format Factory for me that converts just about anything!) and pop ‘em back in.
Shane, looks like Format Factory is free! (Here’s me thinking it was a risky copy!!). Give it a try at http://www.formatoz.com/
cheers maki – my yahoo mail has crashed.. I’ve had to reverse 2 days to get back to some normality on the computer and a have two weeks of paperwork to get in the post first thing….
(…. before I try downloading anything else I’m fetching a bloody beer)
but cheers
(don’t suppose it’s going to be as simple as putting the dvd in the draw and them coming out as tunes – is it?
I dreamed when I was little, that in the future, anything I thought of in my head could be produced in hard copy from this cool machine…. then so many si-fi books I read had similar ideas – I knew it would happen one day.
Then they invented computers and my dreams were dashed… ease, what? and lose the joy of hard work and understanding what brainiacs want you to do.. never!
Hope your computer is back to normal sooner rather than later, Shane!
I understand your paperwork woes. I suffer the same and it’s the end of the month so no shirking over the weekend for me!
FF is pretty easy to use. It can handle (just about) any type of file. You can convert audio to mp3, aac, wma etc and video to other video or sound formats. The files need to be saved on your computer. Then you open FF and choose the (Convert) “all to mp3″ (or whatever format you want) option, drag and drop the files and click on start. Bob’s your dad’s brother!
If you want just sound from a video file you put the file in the window for mp3 or whatever and it does the job. (One of my earworms recently was downloaded from youtube and converted to mp3.) It works a treat. I use it a lot for songs that I have in other formats and want to put in the box, too.
