RIP Ronnie Dio.
There were premature rumours about his death circulating yesterday, but it’s now confirmed he passed away this morning, after a long battle with cancer.
The little man with the big voice, perhaps one of the greatest hard rock/metal singers of all time, fronting Rainbow, putting his own mark on Black Sabbath, followed by a lengthy solo career. Few people have managed to produce all time classic albums with three completely different bands, but with “Rainbow Rising”, “Heaven and Hell” and “Holy Diver”, Dio is one of those few. A true legend.
Being The ‘Spill, there’s really only one song I can link to.
Aw, now that is sad news.
But crikey, it hadn’t occured to me he was 67. It just goes to show that vocal power doesn’t have to diminish with age.
Off to play Heaven & Hell immediately.
Yeah, it’s a shame we can’t possibly crowbar ‘Stargazer’ into this week’s theme. Next week perhaps.
And Darceysdad, if you think about it most of that era of rock performers were born around 1945, which is,er…….65 years ago, so 67 would be the ‘average’ age of the likes of Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Led Zep, The Doors etc.
(If you’ve been watching ‘I’m In A Rock N Roll Band’ on Saturday nights you’ll see what alot of them look like nowadays – old).
jforbes’ suggestion of a tribute theme on ‘songs about wizards’ would be good…
just saw this….sad indeed. You don’t get enough people in bands these days battling giant dragons on stage…..theatricals aside i’m sure his place is well and truly cemented in rock history and rightly so..
Amy Winehouse does
No, Tinny, JP said “dragons”, not “demons”!
That’s chasing, not battling.
