Now you ain’t gonna believe this but we’ve had a long, rainy winter here in Madrid and we were just desperate for the sun to come out! Well, it’s here with a vengeance (temperatures in the high seventies – low eighties Fahrenheit the last couple of days).
And I found myself doing what I always do this time of year – digging that one cd out that I just have to put on to greet the sun. It’s got nothing to do with the sun, nothing at all – but, played absurdly loud, half a dozen bars in I just feel that spring (skank, perhaps) in my step. It’s off with the tie till September, on with the shades and down to the park for a couple of chilled ones before dinner!
Anyone else got a song they greet the change of season with? Not a song about the sun, or even sunny afternoons. Just one they use to signify the change. I’ve been doing this for twenty five or thirty years now! Am I mad? Am I alone?
is there a specific day in september the tie goes back on?
Laugh as you may Blimpy – there is!
Third Monday of the month. I’m on holiday for the first two weeks, or thereabouts (our wedding anniversary is 10th Sept and we are ALWAYS on holiday for that – we honeymooned in Scotland, btw). Third Monday is back to work and nearly always means meetings with the HR bods in the companies where we have the biggest contracts.
do you wake up and go:
“TieDays the Day”?
Yeah – and I have some neckwear that’s tie die for!
Boom tish Tie dum….
time for sleep.. off for a kip(per)
i’ve known this joke since infant school:
A brummie goes for a job interview wearing a polyester shirt, bright flares and big boots.
The interviewer says: “All you need now is a kipper tie.”
The brummie replies: “That would be luvloy, two sugars please.”
i’m not laughing – i’m intrigued!!
oh no, now it looks like i don’t find shanes jokes funny!! dammit!
to clarify, i am intrigued by tie day and amused by the “kipper tie” joke.
gaaah!
Like this thread Maki. Here in the mountains winter can keep coming back like a bad dream. Yesterday we had 100+ mile an hour winds in the valley & today it’s been spitting snow. Some years Spring rolls in and pretty much sticks around. 1966 was one of those. 44 years ago I was Seventeen, had a new girlfriend & this was on every radio it seemed. Daydream – The Lovin’ Spoonful. I do look for a day to play it still. Like this one of yours. Reggae but has a nice lowrider feel. Can you Box it?
Boxed
Package received . Thanks Maki.
“Tie The Rain” by The Beta Band?
I’m gonna give up using the reply function – creates confusion!
Shane’s joke was triple ace!
Blimpy, I’m self employed (teaching English in companies) and the summer is normally less formal and I let myself dress down a bit, but in September there’s a fair bit at stake (there’s about 70 people depending on my getting it right) so I have to get formal in a hurry!
I see!
Love Shane’s joke. And…something else to reply to… Oh Yes! We honeymooned in Scotland, too!!
Nice post, Maki.
I have a whole list of sunshine songs. Which is avoiding the question about songs about change, because we all know I’m not good with change.
I’m actually crazy about all three of these. But I have a lot of other tracks in my sunshine list.
And…for change I’m worried about, I play Mozart’s Hafner serenade in my head. When I was a teenager it was my favorite thing to listen to, and it’s very joyful, and always always, in times of anxiety, I play it back to myself.

Good heavens, I’m actually listening to it now, as actually music for the first time in decades. What a basket case I was!!
Heh heh – mis-read that any way I could have! Stressful afternoon, my apologies. Bu linked to all good songs.
No worries Claire. Looking forward to checking out those links!
Thanks for being so understanding, Mr. Maki. I don’t think that’s a good performance of the Hafner Serenade, but you’ve started me on a quest, and when I find a good one, I’ll drop it! I think it actually does work for change of seasons…I’ll be back…
No specific ‘summer song’, but the first barbecue-by-the-lake of the season (it was last Saturday) usually involves sorting through the chord-sheets in the old guitar case. That always leads to a rediscovery of something, which becomes a summer theme.
This year’s theme is the highly appropriate <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJZiojEGuy0“>Snow Is Gone by Josh Ritter, probably aided by a tonymulryan nom in the blog this week.
I have also been asked (by a charming young lady, so I’m going to try it) to scope out ‘Escape’, by Rupert Holmes. Also known as…..? Anyone (no Googling!)?
Piña Colada. I only remember this ’cause they had “The Sweetest Thing” on telly the other day and Cameron Diaz and Christina Applegate were dancing to it in their undies! Maybe your charming young lady will do the same!
Mate, I’m learning it as fast as I can!
Oops! That link could’ve been tidier! Works, though…
It’s euphoric indie rock’n'roll for me (as the Killers nearly said):
Geneva’s “Into the Blue”
<a href="Here’s a 5-minute live summer afternoon on the (blue)grass party ” rel=”nofollow”>XXXX
lets try that again
Here’s a 5 minute live summer afternoon on the (blue)grass party
Thanks Maki! I haven’t heard that one in years.
So shoot me-

Deeper into summer – anything by UB40. My favorite – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AeRMrZCPGk
And of course Sly and the Family Stone – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ahhmiuyko0
Prunus, for ´tis you is it not, we don’t shoot people round here! And still less for suggesting such feel good summery music. Welcome!
’tis I, Maki. Still trying to escape the unfortunate previous moniker.
Meant to say that i never knew Steel Pulse was British. They play around my area so much that i thought they were locals. If fact, looks like they’re back again the 19th of the month.
Prunus if you want to be Prunus here rather than amylee9 all you have to do is edit your WP profile. Go to “edit profile”. In Basic Details the fifth option down is “Display name publicly as”. Type “Prunus” there and hey presto!
Backwards Maki, i don’t want to be Prunus on the Guardian! Nothing i can do about that except start all over again. Unless you know a way that i can change my username on there?
No. I don’t think it can be done unless you re-register from a different email address and stop using the prunus profile. And I’m not sure that is in-line with their policy.
