That picture is…I don’t know the word. Just amazing. I look forward to listening, but it can’t be now.
I was thinking that if Coucouroucou Paloma and Crane Wife don’t make the list I will be genuinely disappointed, and I don’t recall ever feeling so strongly about others’ nominations.
Is that picture for real?! I’m assuming it’s a disguise to aid fishing, but why would the fish be less scared of a heron than a fisherman? Don’t herons eat fish?! Bizarre. But very beautiful. Oh, and I’m with Claire on Cucurrucucu* Paloma – will be a crime if it doesn’t make the list. But then, this has been a very strong week, music quality-wise…
Gorgeous playlist, ejaydee. Loving the Star Band! And the Ola Podrida. And and and… (OK, I’ve only got that far so far, but will try and find the time to listen to the rest of the tracks at some point!)
Thanks peeps, I nicked it from the Guardian website, the description says that the fisherman actually use that disguise to catch other herons, not fish. Maybe they then use the caught herons to fish for them? You’re right Bish, strong week, I had to leave a few songs out and I still made the playlist longer than I would have liked.
PS Just ‘boxed a live version of Cucurrucucu Paloma that I slightly prefer to the version ejay includes here. Probably only cos I’m more familiar with it. Not sure where I got it from (kazaa? shhh…) so the quality is a bit ropy, but I love the strings on it.
Caetano Velosa just has to make the A this week! Ola Podrida was great too. Ejay, there is a hearty Spanish dish called Olla Podrida from Burgos -beans and chorizo and stuff – the podrida (rotten) would appear to be and ironic corruption of the archaic “poderida” (powerful). Does a similar dish exist in Brazil? And have the guys taken their name from there?
Beans are definitely a staple of Brazilian food, but there’s no real chorizo equivalent, or any cured meat for that matter, at least as far as I know. Not sure where the band took their name from, but seeing as they’re from Texas, I would guess they got their name from Spanish, maybe Mexico has a similar dish.

*Or however you spell it!
I can’t stop looking at that pic. It’s like a Salvador Dali or something. Spooky but stunning.
As you were.

OK, someone else comment now!
Ah, that would make more sense – the heron thing, that is!
That version is just as gorgeous Bish, is that from the album that has Que Não Se Vé?
Dunno where it’s from, I’m afraid. Downloaded it naughtily from somewhere shortly after seeing Talk To Her at the cinema.
Oh right, you did mention that, silly me. Kazaa, eh, that takes me back.
What do you call a man with a seagull on his head?
cliff
oh hah, i get how this reply thing works now. decent
Something to do with that Seagull Farkey guy?
Nah; but keep your heron.
enjoying the list -
for obvious reasons Muddy Waters is bringing a smile to my face and Camille is a big Fav in the sane household.
more owl songs too. ace.
(db crashed on me this afternoon so a few left to hear)
