No smoke without….

Iceland, volcanos, dust clouds, guys who used to be in Sigur Ros, films about dragons, songs from films about dragons with guys who used to be in Sigur Ros when Europe is covered in dragonfire and ash, some days things just come together like this:

  1. By the way, Blimpy, this might appeal, if you’re stuck inside while ash drifts past your windows.. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_4EWQlbz-g]

  2. I’m not sure what to make of it – seems a bit more AnCo than their old stuff? And Balearic too – I mean have you heard the new Health song? It’s totally balearic! What’s that all about???!

  3. It’s Jonsi on his puff, especially written for the How To Train Your Dragon movie – it sounded dead good when it came on over the end credits (ace movie too by the way)

  4. Re the Ruby Suns- there does seem to be a trend towards slightly fuzzy balearic, the new Die Sterne album- the one you likened to LCD Stereoanlage- does much the same thing.

Had to look up Health though, and I admit to being stumped by AnCo- I’m guessing it’s not a pharmaceutical company.

I’ve blown my cover here, right?

  5. Hi Nilp – I was being a bit abbreviative there; AnCo is Animal Collective. I think I may do a modern-balearic post quite soon, cos it’s stacking up quite frankly; especially with summer on the way!

  6. Thanks for the antibreviation… now you mention it I remember those AnCo comments on Youtube. I quite liked the general direction of the Ruby Suns track, without it really being outstanding.
It dates me and I know it isn’t quite fair, but whenever I’m confronted with anything containing dance beats and distorted synths Loveless is my first point of reference, though I appreciate the AnCo sound is much more folk influenced/quirky than Shields.

  7. Well, I didn’t really pay attention to the music, but I’m a bit embarrassed about how much I loved HOw to Train Your Dragon. So much of it was so stupidly cheesified, but, good lord….they got the dragon DOWN. I want that dragon. ANd the relationship of the dragon and the boy, so well done. Now I will listen to the music and re-evaluate, using the non-movie-going brain.

  8. @steen – no need to be embarrassed about “..dragon” i found utterly exhilarating (my first proper 3d film also, mind) and it now stands as the only film that minimcflah has asked to see twice in the cinema (he saw it in 2d first) – he and his mum have been reading the books too, which they assure me are a lot better than the film.

@nilp; i find that a lot of modern stuff really takes from shoegaze generally – whouldathunkit!

  9. Actually it’s been a contention of mine (and maybe yours too, sorry if I missed it, but we all eventually have the same thoughts don’t we, just not in the same order)
anyway, my contention – Sigur Ros are hugely influential on the Brooklyn scene, if you listen to any of those chaps like Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors, Grizzly Bear etc, and imagined the vocal in Icelandic you’d see what I mean. An attempt to slow it all down and make it sound like magic unfolding.
Partially successful. I listened to Veckatimest again the other day and much of it is just bloddy-mindedly obscure and slow. Not a great deal to comment to my ears, opening song Southern Point and last two songs are interesting but a lot of the filler is just that imho.
Meanwhile Jonsi appears to have discovered Junglism. Or is that drum’n'bass. Whatever. Nice.

  10. I don’t know if this track is on the Jonsi LP, but i do know that it’s in the box!

I also forget to ention that even Crystal Castles are sounding balearic these days!! Zounds!
