What would Buffy do..?

“When it’s dark and I’m all alone and I’m scared or freaked out or whatever, I always think, ‘What would Buffy do?’ You’re my hero. Ok, sometimes when it’s dark and I’m all alone I think, ‘What is Buffy wearing..?”

There are of course times when one wishes that life’s problems were as simple and straightforward as the university being a front for a sinister military-industrial complex conducting esoteric experiments on demons as a prelude to the apocalypse, as at least it would mean that someone had a plan… You don’t need to know all about my troubles, except to say that I’m afraid it means that I’m going to be around rather less for a while, and in an even worse mood than normal, so apologies in advance for any gratuitous ‘bukes. In such times, one clings to the few certainties in life, and one of them is that Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a work of undeniable genius (at least as far as Series Five), brilliantly acted, and with a rather good soundtrack. While I console myself by working steadily through the entire oeuvre once again, I felt called upon to present this little celebration of some of its finest musical numbers…

  1. Me too. Buffy is up there with Georgette Heyer's novels as one of the great underrated oevres and one of those things you can watch/read even (or maybe especially) when your whole world is falling apart.

  2. Take care of yourself, Abahachi. 'Fraid I'm about as clued up on Buffy as I am on Machiavellian University political shenanigans – i.e. never so much as seen one instance, and haven't got a clue what anyone is on about.

  3. Podbean loses yet another customer. Never bothered with Buffy, because of the lame movie. But as I (sometimes) trust the taste of Aba, Carole & TFD, maybe this will be the next DVD splurge.

  4. Abahachi – Don't let the man get ya' down. My daughter & I watched Buffy together every episode till she went off to college & then we wrote each other about it. The whole cast was great but James Marsters (Spike) always got me laughing. Here's some lines from one of my favorite episodes -"We like to talk big, vampires do. I'm going to destroy the world. That's just tough guy talk. Strutting around with your friends over a pint of blood. The truth is, I like this world. You've got – the dog racing, Manchester United, and you've got people: billions of people walking around like Happy Meals with legs. It's all right here. But then someone comes along with a vision, with a real passion for destruction. Angel could pull it off. Goodbye Piccadilly, farewell Leicester bloody Square." — Spike

  5. So very many great quotes, fantastic cultural references (my favourite is the debate about which of the Captain and Tennille wielded the real power), a cast that could do comedy and tragedy equally well… Far better than the movie – and an excellent lesson in empowerment for teenage girls, so I brainwashed my stepdaughter with it (only partial success, it has to be admitted) and have every intention of force-feeding my niece when she's old enough.

  6. hope all works out Aba……..and you may have finally convinced me to see what all the fuss is about with Buffy….I saw the original film with that geezer out of Beverley Hills 90210 in it, does that count?
