Talking of those USB-turntable type thingies…

… I got one for Christmas and I’ve begun the long slow process of converting my LPs, 12″ and 7″ singles into mp3s – twenty or so down, a thousand or so to go!

I suspect there are other ‘spillers out there who are undergoing or have already undergone the same process and no doubt, like me, you’ll have come across a huge pile of dross up in the attic. But in amongst it all there are some long-forgotten gems. I thought it might make an interesting diversion from mental illness to share a few of these here. I’ll start the ball rolling with a few of my own favourite recent rediscoveries:

Therese by The Bodines (single)
Texas Fever by Orange Juice
Crooked Mile and 39 Minutes by Microdisney
Volume, Control, Brilliance by the Monochrome Set
Signing Off by UB40

So what have you found in your attics?

  1. 15 LP carrycases, 3 for cassettes, and 27 for CDs, all empty. So at least I know that when I do eventually borrow gordonimmel’s deck (Damn! Should’ve asked him at Tessimmel’s party earlier today!!) I’m at least not going to have to look up there for stuff to transfer.

  2. I found that my copy of Loveless had gone walkabout, so I got another one (£3.50, ta) – and consequently have listened to nothing else for the last 2 weeks ~(except Laura Marling) !

  3. personally speaking, even though I have the means, I’m not gonna convert my vinyl collection to mp3. Vinyl is fine on its own, and plus in 10 years time, evryone;s cds are going to decay, and hard-drives will corrupt or fail – - leaving everyone with a big fat load of f*ck all. Wise up suckers, keep it big, black, and grooved.

  4. You’re welcome oh blimpy one!As for “keep it big, black, and grooved”, I know where you coming from but I’m Edinburgh this week and I have brought over 8,000 tracks with me to listen to on the train (and indeed right now sitting up in bed) – I’d like to see you do that with your vinyl…

  5. “Big black and grooved” _ kinky condom advert anyone? Just me then… Top of the digitisation list – The Bad and Lowdown world of the Kane Gang which I got off Ebay and the Disco Fever 33′ which I got for Chrimbo when I was ten. also, the 12″ of New Order’s Theves Like Us.

  6. I am using my Numark TTusb mainly as turntable on my hi-fi or while doing one of my rare DJ-ing sets. I only digitise things when I really want to hear them on my iPod, some gems:Cowboys International – The original sinMonochrome Set – Strange BoutiqueJames Last – Voodoo Party….and lots of vinyl singlesthe highlight from my tape collection:U2 live @ Pinkpop Festival, 1980

  7. I’m certainly not getting rid of the vinyl but those pesky tapes have no intrinsic or sentimental value and I want them gone. I could very easily put them onto minidisk but at some point I’ll need to put some of them on the computer as well.Samples from the atticHendrix – Band of Gypsys with original cover Jeff Beck – BeckolaAll the Lirrle Feat albums with Lowell George on themPeter Sellers – The Best of SellersYes Songs (blushes)Brenda Wootton – Carillon (Bethnoir might appreciate this one)Lots of early Van MorrisonKiki Dee – Loving and Free (not available on CD or iTunes)
